When we think about podcasts, we get caught up with focusing on good audio quality and the best microphone, which makes sense. You listen to podcasts after all.
But what other podcasters have been missing out on is the branding and visuals. No matter how good your sound is, if you have poorly designed cover art, no one’s gonna take notice of your podcast.
This time, I share with you why we have to create attractive visuals to engage people to click and listen to your podcast and how we can do this by using Canva.
Whenever people search for a topic in the podcast app, they type in their keywords, and usually loads of episodes will come up. If some episodes have the same title, there are two things that the audience will check: the length of the podcast and the cover art. If your podcast cover is not attractive, the listeners will just move on to the next.
Ask yourself: is your cover art attractive to your listeners? Or are they repelled by it?
This is the importance of branding and graphic design. I recommend that you get a dedicated graphic designer for your art to make it look cohesive and on point, but if you’re on a budget, Canva is a very big help to solve that problem.
Canva has pre-designed templates that can definitely help you when it comes to your visuals. With these templates, all you have to do is change and add your photos, and choose your colors.
But here’s the thing: if you’re not a designer or you don’t have an eye for design, you might end up with less-than-desirable cover art compared to the original template.
Look at your cover art. Be honest with yourself. Does your cover art entice people to listen to your podcast? Look at other podcasts with the same niche. Observe and learn a thing or two about how they present their cover art. If yours looks like something a three-year-old has done on Canva, then it’s time to do something about it.
1. Go the minimalist route.
You may opt for black and white, duotone, or three tones max. Avoid adding emojis or glitters because the busier your cover art is, the more overwhelmed the viewer will be. People will not pay attention to your podcast.
2. Use a tagline on your podcast.
If you have a very catchy and clear name, I recommend adding a tagline. It gives the listener clarity about what the podcast is and what will they get from listening. Make it a benefit and outcome-driven statement.
3. Think of your podcast cover art as a book cover.
If people are not attracted to the cover, they’re not going to listen. In the book world, people spend a whole lot of time making sure the book cover hits the mark. The same thing with your podcast, make sure it hits the mark.
So now you have Canva. But what if you are still unsure how to make your visuals better, here’s what I have to offer you.
In my shop, I have officially launched a podcast template. Once you’re in the website shop, you’ll see the podcast pack that contains not only the cover art templates but all other branding materials that you can use. This includes social media graphics for Facebook, Instagram, and Pinterest. You also get Canva templates for audiograms, media kits, and even a podcast planner that’s focused and aligned for your podcasting journey.

I know I discuss SEO a lot, but I also want to make sure that we don’t forget branding. Branding invites people to be interested. It excites the viewers. So it’s high time to let your podcast branding make an impact!
