In this blog post, we’ll explore how you can deal with a particularly harsh podcast review and the valuable lessons I learned along the way. It was a regular day back in January, and I decided to check my podcast’s reviews to see how my audience was responding to the latest episodes. As I scrolled down, I noticed a three-star review that caught my eye. Curiosity piqued, and I clicked on it to see what this person had to say.
Reading the review, I couldn’t help but chuckle at the reviewer’s sarcastic tone. They began by saying, “If you like a simplified explanation of Marketing and Entrepreneurship is spoken to you as if you are her drunk roommate, then these short-span episodes may be your match. I hear a tremendous repetition of promising the juicy bits and then she doesn’t share those juicy bits until halfway through.
It’s rather vague and ironic that one of her episodes is the dark side of coaching wishes, plugging her coaching most of her episodes, maybe I’m too much of a boomer to appreciate it.” The snarkiness was evident, and I had to give them credit for their dark sense of humor.
As I read those words, a mix of emotions washed over me. I felt a bit taken aback; after all, this was the first time in two and a half years that I had received such a critical and aggressive review. It was uncomfortable, and I couldn’t help but wonder if there was any value in it, even though it wasn’t constructive.
I understood the essence of my brand and the unique value I bring to my audience. Embracing my laid-back and casual style, I’ve built a brand that resonates with my listeners. My approach is a reminder that authenticity is crucial, and I’m okay with not fitting into a mold of traditional professionalism. Being true to myself has helped me create a genuine connection with my audience, fostering a sense of relatability.
While negative reviews can sting, they can also offer valuable insights. I took some time to reflect on the critique and sought feedback from a trusted colleague, finding validation in my style and content. Sometimes, a fresh perspective can reaffirm our strengths and help us filter out baseless criticism.
I didn’t let the negative review get the best of me. Instead, I took proactive steps to address it. I shared my experience with my audience, empowering them to handle negative comments with resilience and grace. Additionally, I discovered that it’s possible to have unfair reviews removed, providing a valuable resource to others in similar situations.
