Let’s talk about something that almost every podcaster experiences: impostor syndrome. That feeling of self-doubt and fear creeps in when you launch your podcast. I’ve launched many podcasts, and let me tell you, the imposter syndrome was always there. But guess what? You’re not alone. Everyone feels it, even the most confident people.
It’s simple, really. Your brain doesn’t like change. Podcasting is a new level of visibility, and your brain is freaking out because it’s not used to it. Your brain has a little Rolodex of every time you put yourself out there and how bad it sucked. So, it starts creating stories to keep you safe.
Your brain has a little Rolodex of every time you put yourself out there, and it remembers how bad it sucked. These memories and stories become ingrained in your brain, which then creates narratives to keep you safe. The brain perceives change as a potential threat, and in response, it generates these stories and thoughts to help you avoid potential danger.
Starting a podcast is a big change that challenges your comfort zone, so it’s normal to feel afraid. However, recognizing that your brain is creating these stories to keep you safe can help you overcome impostor syndrome. You can train your brain to adapt to change and realize that launching a podcast isn’t as dangerous as it might seem. With time and practice, you can learn to ignore the negative stories and trust in yourself to succeed.
Let’s set the record straight: Your first episode isn’t going to be amazing. Even if you’re experienced, podcasting is a new thing you’re doing. The first try, maybe the second, third, and fourth, are going to suck. And that’s okay. I remember my very first episode, and it took me a while to get it right. But the key is to keep going, even if you have to restart an episode multiple times. Now, let’s get practical. You are safe, and there is nothing to fear. But to overcome impostor syndrome, you need to do the thing.

One thing that might be helpful is to take a break from the big podcasters with their fancy studios and equipment. Maybe listen to me for a bit. I’m unedited and unfiltered, and my podcasts can be a beacon of hope for you. I have an accent, no fancy microphone, and use a gamer headset. Yet, I’m a top one-and-a-half percent podcaster with a thriving business. Don’t let perfectionism hold you back. Just pick a microphone and get started.
